I was created in you, and you were created for me ......

Cruise To Alaska

It was near the end of the summer when I went on my first cruise of my entire life. I was on the cruise for a week and that week might be the best week of my life yet.

I went to 3 cities called Icy Straight(might be a town), Juneau, and Ketchikan. The city were not that big, but still very cool. Icy Straight was one of the smallest city/town I have ever seen. They have to big houses and that is it. The main tourist attraction was the Zip-line. The line came down from the top of the mountain down to the city/town. We thought it would cost around 30$(since the longest roller coaster in the world at Las Vegas cost only 24$ per person), but it cost 120$!!!! Can you believe it! The ride is only 3 minutes long. Even thought there was a lot of people on the Zip line, we did not ride it.

Juneau was smaller than I expected. The population was not that big, but it was still pretty fun. There was a lot of shops, so we bought lots of clothing and souvenirs to remember that place. There really isn't anything to write about Juneau since I barely did anything there. I wished I followed my friend Eric's sister because they got lots of free jewelries and other stuff which would have made me stayed longer in Juneau.

Ketchikan=Downtown Vancouver, there are shops everywhere. This time I did follow Eric's sister and got a lot of cool things like the Moonlight Sapphire and the Blue Topaz. There is also this place that sells stuff that changes colour in the sun. The stores called Del Sol, I bought a shirt that had a totem pole and says Alaska on it. It changes to almost all the colour you can name of in the sun(I am exaggerating). I also bought a pair of flip flops that changes colour to, but not that much.

The cruise... Don't get me started! There is everything. The food you name it!(this time I am not exaggerating!!) There are so many shows and programs to go to. Then again the shops just sucked. They were all jewelries and other stuff that girls would spend their entire cruise staring at bought the men they rely on to buy things would not buy it(LOL just a joke, I meant not to offend rich women(LOL)). The biggest thing I regret the most doing on the cruise ship was trying to find the mysterious shop called Sony Wonder. I first thought it was a Sony shop so I was excited. I kept trying to find it, but no matter what I just keep ending up in the Fortune Casino(the name of the casino). It turns out that Sony Wonder was actually a bar...Spent 20 minutes of my life trying to find a bar...

The overall experience was great and I had a terrific time. Can't wait till I go on another cruise!!

This summer, my family and I took an amazing cruise on board the Celebrity Mercury to the 49th state of America: Alaska!

I think I should better write about it, while I still remember.

Our adventure started on August 29th, when we walked up the gangway into the cruise ship, the Celebrity Mercury, totally unprepared for the whirlwind of exciting events about to unfold.

Although the smallest of the Celebrity fleet, the Mercury was still big enough for us to get lost on, a fact we found out on that first day. That day, we spent exploring through the endless hallways, receiving warm greetings from the staff, and generally getting to know the ship that was to be our home for the next seven days.

On the second day, we discovered the best part of the cruise, and the worst. The best being the endless buffet, the worst being we were all too seasick to eat. Being seasick is the most horrible feeling you could ever have on a cruise ship; unable to walk around much for fear of throwing up, stomach churning too much to eat, unable to attend the events and seminars because then you can feel the rocking of the ship even more.

There were endless choices of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; everything from Pinacolada ice cream to a whole roasted pig on a platter.

Unfortunately, we didn’t eat any of that. Day Two was an Inside Passage day, which meant we would not be docking anywhere.

Everyone would have been content to spend the whole day eating, except there was the seasick factor and there was just so much to see and experience. Each day was packed full with activities for the guests; seminars, sports events, films, and the highlight of the day: evening Las Vegas-style shows in the Celebrity Theatre!

I’m sorry to say we spent the whole morning and part of the afternoon in our rooms just lying there, trying not to throw up. Ceci, Eric, and I finally got up after hours to head up to the twelfth floor for some DS time, but instead got caught up in scrapbooking and kid’s activities, because we’d stumbled upon a Fun Factory celebration. We became the “Hui-Yang” family and took part in Insanity (and won), played mini-golf, and entered a draw.

That night, we had our first formal dinner, a very exciting experience for everyone. We were served from a top-quality five-course menu: appetizers, soups and salads, entrees, and finally dessert. Our table manners were finally put to the test when we had to eat in beautiful dresses and tuxedos.

Day three was our first port call. This was the day we met the friendly lunch waiter, Sashi, and learned to make “birds-of-paradise” while drinking strawberry and mango cocktails. We arrived at Icy Strait Point, Alaska, in mid-afternoon. The sun had come out, and we all took a stroll around the breathtaking rock beach, a place where we saw jellyfish in the shallows and even a sea anemone washed up on shore.

A hike through the woods resulted in Michael and Ceci to fall flat on their backs after slipping on the mossy logs around the trail. We also discovered lichen!

Icy Strait Point is home to the world’s largest zipline, which unfortunately we did not go on because it cost a ridiculous $120.

When we got back for dinner, I received a call from the Fun Factory staff calling to say that we had won the draw! Everyone else had left for dinner already, so only my dad and I went to pick it up and were able to surprise the others at the dinner table with our gifts. Ceci chose the blue blow-up exercise ball, Eric obtained the blue Fun Factory cap, and I picked the mini-plush-pillow, used for long road trips and such.

On the first day of September, we caught our first glimpse of the largest tidewater glacier in North America, the Hubbard Glacier. It was nothing like the glaciers we had seen in Banff; bigger, wider, taller, and, if possible, bluer. That day, we were lucky enough to have the perfect weather, overcast with hints of sunshine and sprinkles of rain, to get within a mile of the glacier. We were close enough for the crew of the Mercury to send out a tender and haul aboard our cruise ship a piece of thousand year-old ice that had broken off the Hubbard Glacier itself.

That evening, there was an incredible magic show performance in the Celebrity Theatre—Haines Magic! The magician was David Haines, hence the name Haines Magic, and his partner in magic as well as life, Abby. They performed big illusions (sawing a person in half, making someone disappear) and small illusions (slight of hand tricks with rubber bands or small objects). But the most amazing of all was the illusion nicknamed “Simply Impossible”, where the magician was in a box, his assistant on the outside. A cloth was obscuring our view of them, and in that split second, they have somehow switched places, because the cloth has dropped and you can now see the magician free, while his assistant is in the box. The applause was just as incredible as the show that night.

September 2nd we stopped at the capitol of Alaska, Juneau. Here, our “trick-or-treating” for jewels began. You see, we—or should I say Ceci—had hoarded quite a number of coupons for obtaining free items from jewellery stores, and our first trick-or-treating stop was Juneau. We also rode a gondola up Mount Roberts and learned about the Tlingit people and culture, viewed a blind female eagle named Lady Baltimore, and bought a Poo-Poo Bear. There was a tour around the State Capitol Building, which we attended, and a mini-movie in the equally mini Alaska State Museum.

Today’s show was a comedy, the comedian being Louis Johnson. Michael found it VERY funny, which should’ve given you a heads-up that this was going to be something only a person like Michael could enjoy.

For once the highlight of the night was not the show; it was the ‘Designed For You’ Culinary Extravaganza! (In other words, a feast of chocolate, a chocoholic’s dream come true, a contest to see who can eat the most desserts and pastries, an event that guarantees the guests a ten-pound gain by the end of the night…)

Chocolate fountain, white chocolate fountain, intricately carved ice sculpture décor, music on the dance floor, chocolate dipped fruit kebabs, chocolate buffet… Do I need to say anything more?

The next day was Eric’s birthday, and at midnight I sang Happy Birthday to him:

Happy birthday to you,

You’re a hundred and two!

You look like a monkey,

And you smell like one too!

That day we docked in the first city established in Alaska, Ketchikan, also known as the salmon capitol of the world and the quaintest little seaside town ever.

Our group split up here, and half of us, specifically the kids and two mothers, continued our trick-or-treating expedition and gained many new free objects. It was here that the Great Mom Marathon happened… we were short on free coupons that day and my mother had to run back down to our cruise ship, which was unfortunately docked at the farthest port, and back with the coupons.

We made it back in time to change and get made-up for formal dinner, where there was a miniature cake for Eric.

Our adventure to Alaska concluded on September 5th. We docked in Vancouver just before noon, and we all stepped off in a daze, the thoughts in everyone’s head circling around Was… was that seven days? Was it really? Because it seemed like we had just got on and now we have to come off. Why didn’t we book the 32-day cruise!?

We all gained an experience on the Celebrity Mercury that will never be able to be put into words, or be written onto paper. This journal will have to suffice. It has made such an impression, we still dream about that wonderful cruise ship when we’re asleep in our own beds at home.

It’s something you’ll have to experience yourself.
