由于新冠疫情仍然严重，3月和4月，加拿大已经连续两个月大量流失工作，失业率急升，经济学家们也不看好5月份，多数人认为由于限制措施依然，很多企业和商家都没有恢复营业，因此数字可能会很难看。
根据金融市场数据公司Refinitiv对加拿大经济学家和分析师的调查，他们普遍预期，加拿大5月将失去500,000份工作，失业率会再度升高，升至15.0%。
应该说这些专家的预测是有根据的，受疫情影响，今年3月份有超过100万加拿大人失业，失业率从2月份的5.6％攀升至7.8％。4月份情况更糟：近200万人失业，失业率进一步升高。
不过加通社刚刚报道说，联邦统计局今天发布的数据显示，由于各省区经济逐步重启，5月份增加了近29万份工作，准确数字是289,600，也许这是经济学家们始料未及的。
不过，失业率仍然急升到13.7%，打破了38年来的记录。此前13.1%的失业率是在1982年12月创下的。实际上，联邦统计局的可比资料也只有短短40年。
联邦统计局解释说，5月份失业率之所以如此之高，原因在于有更多人待业，他们正进入劳动力市场寻找工作，还有不少人则处于隐形失业或半失业状态，他们的工作时间比以往大幅减少。
统计局表示，由于有关限制措施开始实施之后，商店和企业等纷纷被迫关闭，很多人的工作时间大大减少。统计局的就业调查显示，在5月份，有近30万人，或292,000人表示，他们的工作时间比正常减少了一半左右。
